Peak Coal
OK so we use to worry about peak oil, but what about peak coal? Well, latest estimates are that most of US high grade coal is gone. Appalachian Mountains mines use to have a lot of bituminous coal, but the richest deposits played out. China use to be an exporter of coal, but now they are an importer. Sad truth is that proven reserves of bituminous coal are much lower than once believed.
The move away from carbon based fuels and toward wind energy should take place fast, because we are running out of fossil fuels. US power plants will burn less than one billion tons of coal. Part of the reason is our current economic recession, but with peak coal coming we should find new source of energy.
